San Francisco's City Hall is one of the country's most magnificent Beaux-Arts buildings. It is an enormous building, occupying two city blocks. Its central dome - based on the Dôme des Invalides in Paris - is even taller than that of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The city hall's grandeur was symbolic for the growing importance of the city of San Francisco.
